British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several approach shafts providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," he commented. "Including them were a great many UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
